To help develop a new generation of investigative reporters in an era of cutbacks at major news organizations, the Investigative Reporting Program at the Graduate School of Journalism established the Investigative Reporting Fellowships. These positions are designed to enable select journalists with a proven ability to tell complex stories in the public interest to pursue a story for up to one year by providing them with a salary, benefits, up to $10,000 for approved expenses, office space and editorial guidance. Fellows must demonstrate a record of substantial experience in investigative reporting, be it in writing, producing, or editing, and will be expected to develop their proposed project to the point of funding, broadcast, or publishing. Their responsibilities may include (but are not limited to): conducting research, managing data, writing, video or audio production, editing, fact- checking, and working collaboratively with others. Fellows will meet regularly with the IRP’s director and may participate in program workshops.
The fellowships are open to all working investigative journalists, with preference given to those with a master’s degree or equivalent in journalism from UC Berkeley or a similar program.
This is a one-year full-time academic appointment expected to begin on September 1, 2019. Fellows are expected to refrain from outside journalistic projects and to use the Berkeley offices as their base of operations during the fellowship. Occasionally, the IRP awards special project support in lieu of a fellowship in-residence.
Successful candidate will be appointed in the Associate Specialist or Specialist title. Rank and step will be determined at time of appointment based on years of prior experience and record of accomplishment.
Basic Qualifications (at time of application):
- Master’s degree in journalism or equivalent degree or five years professional experience.
Additional Qualifications (by start date):
- Demonstrated success in reporting on complex subjects in the public interest.
- Proven production abilities, including editorial skills, technical ability, and organizational skills. Successful application of research techniques, such as interviewing, public record searches, etc.
Five years’ experience as a professional investigative journalist or documentary filmmaker at the time of application is preferred. Students who have just completed a master’s degree or equivalent in journalism from UC Berkeley or a similar program by time of appointment, however, are eligible for consideration.

Project proposals should be limited to three pages and may include print, online, video, and/or documentary film components. Prior to submitting a proposal, it is required that all previous information in the subject area be researched. Please identify specifically how the proposed project differs from its predecessors. If the subject area has not been reported on, please include this in the proposal (i.e. an exhaustive search of Lexis-Nexis and other databases reveals very little has been reported in this area). Please check for print, online, video, and documentary film coverage of the proposed subject area in the last five years. Proposals submitted in previous years’ competitions will not be accepted.
Letters of reference will only be solicited for finalists. All letters will be treated as confidential per University of California policy and California state law. Salary & Benefits:
The payroll title for this position is Associate Specialist to Full Specialist. Salary will be commensurate with qualification and experience.
